Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed that despite the ongoing trade tensions and negative comments from U.S. administration officials, he maintains frequent communication with President Donald Trump. Carney emphasized that recent discussions with Trump have centered on global affairs, particularly the impact of conflicts in Ukraine and Iran on international energy and grain markets. Speaking at a news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, Carney highlighted the importance of collaboration with the United States in addressing global issues.

Following the breakdown of tariff negotiations between Canada and the U.S., retaliatory actions were taken by both sides. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on numerous Canadian products, prompting Canada to respond with equivalent tariffs on U.S. imports. In response, the Trump administration announced additional tariffs and bans on certain Canadian imports. Carney refrained from confirming whether Canada would implement further counter-tariffs on U.S. goods, stating that his government is evaluating the recent U.S. measures.

Despite the stalled talks, Carney expressed optimism about reaching a fair agreement with the U.S., emphasizing the potential for a mutually beneficial deal. Notably, President Trump and key officials have made disparaging remarks about Canada in various forums. Carney addressed these comments by asserting that such behavior is unbecoming of their positions. When questioned about Trump’s continued criticisms of Canada, Carney declined to speculate on the reasons behind them, emphasizing that the issue pertains to Canadian sovereignty rather than emotions.

Carney’s remarks underscore the ongoing diplomatic challenges between Canada and the U.S., highlighting the complexities of international trade relations amidst political tensions.
