Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has expressed that Canadians are feeling “wounded” and “confused” by the targeting of Canada and its economy by U.S. President Donald Trump. Poilievre conveyed these sentiments during an interview with reporters on the U.S. network CNBC while in New York advocating for a return to normal trade relations.
Highlighting the deep economic ties between Canada and the U.S. that have fostered peace and prosperity over the years, Poilievre emphasized the importance of tariff-free trade moving forward. He acknowledged existing grievances on both sides, such as American buy-America policies and tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber, but stressed the need to address these issues collaboratively for the benefit of both nations.
Stating his purpose in New York as fighting against tariffs and promoting job creation on both sides of the border, Poilievre mentioned engaging with investors and business leaders while underscoring his primary audience as the American people. He emphasized the potential for enhanced safety, wealth, and affordability through free trade between Canada and the U.S.
In addition to his trade advocacy, Poilievre announced his plans to remain in New York for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 to pay tribute to the victims and commemorate the unity between Canadians and Americans following the tragic terrorist attacks.
During his CNBC interview, Poilievre declined to criticize Prime Minister Mark Carney’s actions in recent trade negotiations, asserting that his focus is on advocating for his country rather than engaging in political point-scoring. He emphasized the importance of leveraging Canada’s strong friendship with the American people in advancing mutual interests.
Acknowledging Poilievre’s diplomatic approach, co-host Joe Kernen commended the Conservative leader for refraining from criticizing Carney while abroad, noting the rarity of such restraint among opposition politicians in the U.S. Kernen praised Poilievre for his decorum in handling sensitive political matters.
Discussing Canada’s economic performance and potential challenges, Poilievre emphasized the need for the U.S. to strengthen alliances with like-minded nations that uphold values such as free speech, free markets, and free trade. He advocated for a collaborative approach to addressing shared challenges and harnessing the collective resources of North America for mutual benefit.
