Dan Levy has expressed his disapproval of Shane Gillis’s recent monologue on Saturday Night Live, particularly the derogatory remarks aimed at women wearing short shorts to the gym. In a video shared on Instagram, Levy criticized the use of the term “whores” to describe such women, without directly naming Gillis. The controversial comments made by Gillis during his hosting of the show included remarks about women’s attire at the gym, likening it to fishing bait.
Levy, known for his role in Schitt’s Creek and having hosted SNL himself in 2021, condemned the objectification of women and called out the misogynistic nature of such jokes. He emphasized the importance of men standing up against such behavior to prevent the perpetuation of a culture that leads to the mistreatment of women.
The backlash against Gillis’s comments coincides with public outrage surrounding the Cornell 7, a group of men accused of gang rape at an Ivy League frat house in 2024. The case has sparked discussions on consent and the societal norms that allow such incidents to occur.
Criticism of the joke also extended to SNL fans, questioning the approval of the controversial content, especially in light of the ongoing conversations surrounding sexual assault. While some defended Gillis, citing artistic freedom, others condemned the monologue as misogynistic and enabling rape culture.
Gillis, no stranger to controversy, has faced backlash in the past for his remarks, leading to his dismissal as an SNL cast member in 2019. Despite past controversies, Gillis has returned to host the show multiple times, with his latest appearance drawing mixed reactions for his comments during the monologue and subsequent sketch.
In addition to the criticism of his remarks about women’s appearances at the gym, Gillis also faced backlash for using offensive language in a sketch and dropping an expletive during the live broadcast, which went uncensored in certain regions. Gillis apologized for the incident at the end of the show.
