U.S. President Donald Trump has caused concern in the North Atlantic with his recent map presentation. Trump shared a map on social media during the holiday weekend, featuring the U.S. flag colors draped over North America, including Canada, Mexico, Greenland, and Iceland. This action led Iceland to summon its ambassador in response.

The social media post on Truth Social did not provide any clarification but echoed Trump’s previous discussions about potentially making Canada the 51st state and his interest in acquiring Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen criticized Trump’s actions, calling them inappropriate and expressing the need to temper such maximalist visions. Iceland’s Foreign Secretary Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir also condemned the post as unacceptable during a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Billy Long.

The Arctic region has been tense since Trump intensified his rhetoric earlier in the year regarding U.S. control over Greenland. Trump’s recent post coincided with the European Union’s efforts to reassure Greenland with promises of enhanced partnerships and substantial investments after facing Trump’s repeated threats.

The proximity of Iceland to Greenland raised alarms, especially after Trump repeatedly mentioned Iceland while discussing his aspirations for Greenland. This situation prompted Iceland’s government to advance a referendum on EU membership.

In response to Trump’s frequent suggestions about Canada becoming a U.S. state and the ongoing trade disputes between the two nations, over 225,000 Canadians signed a petition calling for the expulsion of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra. Former UN Ambassador Bob Rae expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such actions, citing Hoekstra’s close ties to the Trump administration.

Trump’s remarks and actions continue to strain relations with Canada, making it challenging to refocus on trade agreements. Rae criticized the administration for its lack of respect towards Canada and its people.

Aside from the map controversy, Trump also proposed renaming New Mexico to “New America” over the Labor Day weekend.
