The federal government is gearing up to implement the long-awaited sport funding program, nearly five months after the initial announcement. A total of 101 applications were received for the supplementary core funding, surpassing the available budget by approximately $40 million for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The applications were submitted by various national sport organizations (NSOs), multi-sport organizations (MSOs), and members of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network.
As winter sports season approaches and summer sports are in full swing, there is a sense of urgency within the industry to secure the funding. Canada Snowboard’s CEO, Dustin Heise, mentioned that they have been informed about the impending funding release and are expecting clarity within the next few weeks. Bahoz Dara Aziz, representing the office of the Secretary of Sport for Canada and Olympic kayak champion Adam van Koeverden, confirmed that the applications are currently under review, with funding decisions expected to be made soon.
A significant $755 million has been pledged by the federal government over five years to address the funding challenges in Canadian sports. This includes a substantial increase in core funding, support for the Athlete Assistance Program, and funding for event hosting and infrastructure. The Future of Sport in Canada commission report highlighted the underfunding of NSOs, prompting the government to make this historic investment in sports.
Van Koeverden is organizing a summit for sport leaders in Ottawa, which is anticipated to be a crucial event in the industry. The dispersion of funds is a key consideration, with stakeholders emphasizing the importance of strategic allocation over speed in distribution. The funding applications focus on various initiatives, including safe sport practices, system efficiency improvements, and grassroots development.
The government has already started allocating funds from the Build Communities Strong Fund for sports infrastructure projects. Despite the discrepancy between the funding requests and available budget, there is a collective eagerness within the sports community to utilize the funds effectively. The increased investment in sports is viewed as a pivotal moment for the industry, with stakeholders acknowledging the transformative impact it can have on Canadian sports development.
