“Capital Pride Ottawa Gears Up for Parade Revival”

Date:

The Capital Pride festival organizers in Ottawa are eager for this Sunday’s parade following the cancellation of last year’s flagship event due to disruptions caused by a local pro-Palestinian group. David Breault, the chair of Capital Pride’s board of directors, expressed confidence that this year’s parade will proceed smoothly without any issues, although preparations are in place in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The cancellation of last year’s parade stemmed from a statement made by Capital Pride in 2024 expressing solidarity with Palestine, which sparked controversy and led to the withdrawal of support from various organizations and individuals, including the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. Amidst calls for reinstating the statement, tensions escalated during the 2025 parade when Queers for Palestine Ottawa blocked the route, resulting in the event being called off.

Reflecting on the previous year’s challenges, Capital Pride acknowledged the disappointment and logistical constraints that led to the parade’s cancellation. This year, with a new route planned through downtown Ottawa, organizers are optimistic about the parade’s success. The event will start from Lebreton Flats, proceed eastward to Parliament, and pause at the Thunderhead monument, symbolizing solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ+ community nationwide.

Amid global safety concerns for LGBTQ+ events, Ottawa Police Service announced enhanced security measures for this year’s Capital Pride parade. Despite the complex history between the queer community and law enforcement, organizers emphasize the importance of ensuring safety while fostering inclusivity. Private security and support from community organizations like Max Ottawa are integral to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.

With over 150 groups participating, including Mayor Sutcliffe and his election rivals, the parade is expected to culminate at Bank and Slater streets, where a street festival will take place. Capital Pride anticipates a vibrant and successful event, showcasing unity and diversity within the community.
