The Montreal Victoire’s missing Walter Cup championship trophy has been located and returned to the team by the Professional Women’s Hockey League, as announced on Monday. The PWHL expressed gratitude to all involved in the search for the trophy and acknowledged the support from fans.
Last week, the trophy disappeared during shipment to Lethbridge, Alberta, where it was scheduled to be with Victoire forward Dara Greig. Although a container arrived, it did not contain the trophy as intended by the PWHL.
The league humorously mentioned that even the Walter Cup can have its own off-season adventure, and they anticipate the Victoire team resuming their celebrations with the cup. The exact location of where the trophy was found and the circumstances of its disappearance remain unclear, with the league stating it was “lost in shipment.”
It should be noted that the missing trophy was a replica known as the team’s “keeper” cup, not the one presented to the championship-winning team on the ice. The original Walter Cup is permanently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Montreal earned the cup by defeating Ottawa in the fourth game of a best-of-five series in May, becoming the PWHL’s first Canadian champion. The trophy is named after PWHL founder and major supporter Mark Walter and his wife, Kimbra. Mark Walter, who owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently agreed to sell his controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers.
