Osee Podolsky, the general manager of Podolski Honey Farms, expressed concerns about the impact of the recent tariffs imposed by the United States on Canadian goods, including natural honey. Podolsky highlighted that a significant portion of the honey produced by their family business in Ethelbert, Manitoba, is typically sold to customers in the U.S. However, with the new tariffs in place, it has become financially unsustainable to continue exporting to their American clientele.
The tariffs were implemented after unsuccessful trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the U.S. had made unreasonable demands that undermined the benefits to Canada, leading to the breakdown of the talks. Carney emphasized that Canada would not compromise its sovereignty or key industries in the negotiations.
In response to the tariffs, Canada plans to retaliate with equivalent tariffs set to take effect after Labour Day. This move is expected to counter the economic impact of the U.S. tariffs on Canadian businesses like Podolski Honey Farms, which rely heavily on exports to the U.S. market.
The situation has left small businesses, including honey producers, feeling the brunt of the trade dispute. Podolsky highlighted the challenges faced by his farm, noting that if the tariffs persist, it could lead to bankruptcy. The farm is now focusing on fulfilling existing Canadian contracts while exploring strategies to navigate the uncertain market conditions.
Loren Remillard, the president and CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, expressed disappointment over the tariffs’ effects on local businesses. He emphasized the importance of standing firm in negotiations to secure a favorable trade deal for Canada. Similarly, Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson highlighted the need to prioritize Canadian businesses and explore alternative trade opportunities amid the unpredictable nature of U.S. trade policies.
Podolsky underscored the mutual benefits of Canada-U.S. trade for beekeepers on both sides of the border, emphasizing the importance of resolving the tariff dispute promptly. He expressed hope for a resolution that would remove the tariffs and restore stability to cross-border trade relationships.
