Female Hiker Found Dead on Tent Ridge

A female hiker lost her life while hiking on Tent Ridge in Kananaskis Country. Emergency services discovered her on Monday, according to authorities.

A representative from the Ministry of Forestry and Parks mentioned that Kananaskis Mountain Rescue sprang into action around 8 p.m. following a hailstorm, leading to an extensive ground search throughout the night. RCMP reported that they joined Kananaskis Mountain Rescue around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday to assist in locating the woman. The search involved the participation of Canmore RCMP’s canine unit and paramedics were also involved.

Constable Sandra Geiger confirmed that the hiker was found the following day. Law enforcement stated that the incident was not deemed suspicious, and the cause of death was being determined by the chief medical examiner’s office. The woman’s personal details, including her age and place of residence, were withheld by the police.

This marks the fifth hiking-related fatality in Banff National Park and Kananaskis Country since June. Notably, this incident is the first death recorded on Tent Ridge since 2016.

The popularity of summer hiking has surged in recent years. Data from an access to information request by CBC News revealed a significant increase in hikers on Tent Ridge, from an estimated 8,560 in 2019 to 20,425 in 2025. Over the period from 2019 to 2025, an average of 14,528 hikers were recorded annually.

Between 2017 and 2025, Kananaskis Mountain Rescue received a total of 49 distress calls in the Tent Ridge area, encompassing situations such as hikers overdue, broken ankles, and minor injuries.
