Meta Commits $18B to Improve Safety for Teen Users

Date:

Teen users of Instagram and Facebook will soon experience changes as Meta, the parent company, has agreed to implement platform design adjustments and pay up to $18 billion US over the next ten years to address concerns about online harm to young individuals raised by various U.S. states and territories. This settlement has been described as the most significant state consumer protection agreement in history, parallel to the tobacco settlements of the 1990s. Analysts view this as a pivotal moment for the social media industry, likening it to the tobacco industry’s turning point.

Upcoming modifications for users under 18 on Instagram and Facebook include time limitations, blackout periods during late night and early morning hours, enhanced control over feeds, restrictions on social comparison features, and improved age verification processes. Meta has committed to maintaining its existing safety measures and enhancing parental controls. Moreover, Meta may further restrict daily usage if other social media platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube adopt similar changes.

While these adjustments are initially targeted at the U.S. market, experts anticipate a global spread of these changes, including in Canada, due to growing concerns worldwide about the adverse effects of social media on youth. The settlement is seen as a positive step by advocates for online safety, yet they emphasize the need for continuous efforts to address the addictive nature of social media platforms.

Although the settlement represents a significant shift in Meta’s approach, experts believe more comprehensive actions are necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all users, emphasizing the need for independent reviews and further regulatory measures. The settlement could influence future regulations in Canada and prompt other tech giants to proactively address similar concerns to avoid legal repercussions. Meta’s focus on resolving social media issues could pave the way for advancements in artificial intelligence technologies, signaling its strategic shift towards AI development.
