Outside a Massachusetts courtroom, Lindsay Clancy is undergoing trial for the deaths of her three children. Speaking to reporters, Marta Quijano, a supporter and physician, expressed frustration at the dismissal of women’s concerns. Danielle Buckley, who traveled from Maine to attend the closing arguments, emphasized the desire for justice for the children.
Clancy stands accused of strangling her three children in 2023 while her husband was away. Her defense acknowledges the killings but argues she was not criminally responsible due to bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors allege Clancy planned the murders to coincide with her husband’s absence.
Following closing arguments, jurors have begun deliberations. If found guilty, Clancy faces life imprisonment without parole. However, if deemed not criminally responsible or insane, she would be committed to a psychiatric facility.
The trial has sparked discussions on maternal mental health, particularly postpartum psychosis. Individuals have shared their struggles with accessing mental health support after childbirth, with some identifying with Clancy’s experiences. Dr. Crystal Clark highlighted the importance of recognizing and addressing the distress faced by new mothers.
The trial resumes deliberations the following day, with heightened awareness of postpartum mental health challenges but concerns about increasing stigma. Clark emphasized the rarity of infanticide in postpartum mental illnesses and the need for improved support and early intervention for struggling mothers.
