WestJet has been criticized by Canada’s transportation regulator for imposing a discriminatory policy that restricts some power wheelchairs from being carried on its planes, creating obstacles for travelers with disabilities. The Canadian Transportation Agency has ruled that WestJet must eliminate its 136-kilogram weight limit on mobility aids by July 2027. Until then, the airline is advised to use “spreader plates” to evenly distribute the wheelchair’s weight in the cargo hold and make alternative travel arrangements with other carriers.
The issue was raised by Winnipeg resident Steven Fletcher, a former federal minister of state for transport, who was prevented from flying with his custom wheelchair on a Winnipeg to Toronto flight last year. Advocates argue that the weight restriction has limited air travel options in certain regions and discriminated against individuals with disabilities.
WestJet has refrained from commenting on the matter as it is still under regulatory review. The agency is expected to issue a final decision on the notice period passengers using mobility aids must provide to the airline.

The debate over weight limits for power wheelchairs extends beyond WestJet, as other airlines, including Flair Airlines, have similar restrictions for safety and aircraft weight capacity reasons. Despite safety concerns, advocates argue that such policies hinder accessibility for individuals with disabilities and limit their travel options.
