A video released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security displaying individuals in restraints boarding a deportation flight to Haiti has sparked condemnation. Critics accuse the U.S. government of instilling fear within Haitian communities as it intensifies deportations to the violence-stricken nation. The footage, shared on social media, depicts several Black men being escorted onto a plane with their hands and feet bound, connected by a chain around their waists.
The video caption states that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti has been terminated, and the individuals shown are on a “Haiti repatriation flight.” Those with terminated TPS are instructed to leave immediately or face deportation. TPS is a U.S. designation that provides foreign nationals the ability to reside and work in the U.S. without deportation fears when conditions in their home countries are considered unsafe.
In a significant move, the U.S. Supreme Court permitted the Trump administration to proceed with the termination of TPS for Haitians, impacting over 300,000 individuals in the U.S. The termination became effective in late July, despite concerns raised by legal and human rights advocates regarding the rampant gang violence and instability in Haiti.
The Florida Democratic Party criticized the DHS video, denouncing the administration’s actions and labeling the deportation of Haitian families as “depravity disguised as policy.” Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari also condemned the video, describing it as one of the worst actions by the Trump administration.
Haiti continues to face significant security challenges, with escalating gang violence following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. The power vacuum created by the assassination has exacerbated the country’s longstanding security issues. The situation in Haiti has led to approximately 1.5 million internally displaced individuals due to gang-related violence, resulting in a high number of casualties.
The U.S. government is reportedly planning to increase the frequency of deportation flights to Haiti following the cancellation of TPS, aiming to escalate from one flight per month to one per week. The Department of Homeland Security declined to provide further details on the recent deportation flight or future removal plans for operational security reasons.
Despite the escalating deportations, concerns persist over the safety and well-being of the individuals being returned to Haiti, especially amid the country’s ongoing security challenges. The Haitian Bridge Alliance, a support group for Haitian immigrants in the U.S., highlighted the distress felt by many in the community facing the harsh reality of losing TPS and the fear of deportation.
