Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, a distinguished player with an Olympic gold medal and three Vezina trophies, has made a public request for a trade. Speculation about Hellebuyck’s future has been ongoing among hockey enthusiasts and pundits for several months. In a statement released by his agent on Thursday, Hellebuyck confirmed that he had privately asked the Jets for a trade a few months back.
The 33-year-old netminder expressed that he had handled the situation discreetly to give the team time to consider its options. With the upcoming training camp, Hellebuyck felt it was necessary to publicly acknowledge his trade request. He stated that he believes moving on is the best decision for himself and his family, expressing gratitude to the Winnipeg Jets’ fans for their support throughout his career.
Hellebuyck, who hails from Michigan, achieved a remarkable milestone by being named both the league’s MVP and top goalie in the 2024-25 NHL season when the Jets clinched the league’s best record for the first time in franchise history.
Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff mentioned in a subsequent statement that there were no new developments regarding Hellebuyck’s future with the team. Cheveldayoff acknowledged Hellebuyck’s desire for a change and praised his significant contributions to the organization over the years. He assured that the team would handle the situation thoughtfully and with respect.
Hellebuyck reminisced in his statement about being drafted by the Jets in 2012 and reiterated his dedication to proving his worth since that moment. Notably, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year for his outstanding performance in the Olympic gold-medal game against Canada, where he made 41 saves on 42 shots. Hellebuyck has also been a finalist for the Vezina Trophy on five occasions.
