Residents in a small city are facing a challenging situation where they feel trapped in their own homes due to a significant infestation of mutant midges capable of transmitting harmful diseases. The city of Ilhota, located in the Itajaí Valley in Brazil, is struggling with an influx of maruim insects, a type of midge known for causing various unpleasant symptoms through their bites. To avoid encounters with these mutant midges, residents are compelled to keep their doors and windows shut at all times, resorting to using fans to combat the resulting heat.
Concerned residents have expressed frustrations over the intense heat and constant attacks by the aggressive insects, forcing them to cover up exposed skin for protection. In interviews with local publication Globo, residents shared their experiences of feeling like prisoners within their own homes due to the extreme precautions they must take.
The maruim midges pose a unique threat as their bites lead to localized skin irritation, itching, and the potential transmission of diseases such as Oropouche fever, a dengue-like illness characterized by sudden fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, and vomiting. Despite residents’ efforts to seek help from authorities, the lack of a specific control product has allowed the insect population to multiply unchecked, spreading to neighboring areas like Luiz Alves.
Officials in Luiz Alves have attempted to combat other midge species using a biological larvicide, but they have yet to effectively address the maruim infestation. This situation has had severe repercussions, including impacting individuals like Veronita Pelz, a cancer patient who opted to stay in the hospital rather than risk exposure to the relentless black flies outdoors.
Apart from being a nuisance, the diseases carried by these midges can have devastating consequences, particularly for pregnant women, as evidenced by two reported fetal deaths during a previous outbreak. Similar to mosquitoes, only female maruim midges feed on humans to obtain blood necessary for their reproductive cycle.
