Anthony Giblin, aged 59, sustained a fractured eye socket and faced severe vision loss in his right eye due to physical aggression during his arrest. He recounted being punched and forcefully shoved onto a cell bed by four officers, leading to significant injuries and a distressing ordeal.
The incident occurred in July 2021 when Anthony was apprehended for suspected violation of a court order and taken to Swinton police station in Greater Manchester. He was among three individuals who testified in the independent Baird Inquiry, focused on examining the treatment of those detained by Greater Manchester Police (GMP). The inquiry revealed instances of unlawful arrests, strip searches, and degrading treatment within police custody.
Following a civil lawsuit, GMP reached an out-of-court settlement with Anthony, awarding him a substantial sum in damages. Despite undergoing emergency medical intervention to address eye injuries, Anthony continues to experience lasting physical and psychological effects, including permanent numbness and partial vision impairment.
