“HMRC Notifies 1 Million Taxpayers of Refund Eligibility”

Date:

HMRC has sent out a notification to nearly one million individuals who are entitled to a tax refund. Last year, HMRC contacted these individuals after they had overpaid income tax, typically due to errors in their tax codes.

If you have overpaid tax, HMRC usually sends a P800 tax calculation letter with instructions on how to claim your refund. You can claim your refund online or opt to receive a check by mail.

It is crucial to correct any inaccuracies in your tax code as it determines the amount of tax deducted from your earnings. The common tax code, 1257L, is for individuals with a single job or pension, but variations exist based on individual circumstances.

Various factors can lead to an incorrect tax code, such as starting a new job or providing incorrect income information to HMRC. To verify your tax code, refer to your recent payslip or P45 if you recently left employment.

If you believe you have overpaid tax and are due a refund, contact HMRC at 0300 200 3300 or use the HMRC app to make a claim. Conversely, if you have underpaid tax, it is advisable to address the issue promptly to avoid accumulating a larger tax debt.

By staying proactive in managing your tax affairs, you can ensure that you receive the refunds you are owed and avoid potential financial burdens in the future.
