Up to 1.5 million children will see improvements in their well-being starting today as the Conservative government has officially removed the two-child benefit cap. Advocates have praised this decision as a significant milestone, attributing the harsh restrictions to driving 100 children daily into poverty. Despite opposition from the Conservative and Reform parties, approximately half a million children will be lifted out of poverty due to this flagship policy change.
Both right-wing parties have expressed intentions to reinstate the policy, which limits benefits like Universal Credit to a family’s first two children, if they gain power. Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society, emphasized the positive impact of ending the two-child limit, stating that it will positively affect families nationwide by alleviating the financial burden that has disproportionately affected children for years.
Angi Gibson, headteacher at Hadrian Park Primary School in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, highlighted the immediate and tangible benefits that families will experience as a result of this change. She emphasized that this adjustment is crucial in enhancing children’s life opportunities, describing it as a transformation in their prospects rather than just a policy shift.
Helen Barnard, director of policy and research at the Trussell Trust, underscored the significance of lifting the two-child limit, stating that it will have a profound impact on thousands of families and the food banks that support them. The move is expected to reduce the need for emergency food assistance, thus relieving pressure on strained services and providing families with the stability they deserve.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced during the Budget in November that the complete removal of the two-child limit would take place. Research indicates that two-thirds of the affected children come from households with at least one working adult.
The Labour Party views this change as a monumental step in reducing child poverty and providing crucial support to families. Party chairwoman Anna Turley emphasized the stark contrast between Labour’s commitment to investing in children’s futures and the regressive child poverty policies of the Conservatives and Reform. The Employment minister, Dame Diana Johnson, welcomed the law change, highlighting the positive impact it will have on children’s security and prospects, signaling progress towards breaking the cycle of background-related disadvantages.
