The newly elected leader of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation aims to bring the community together to address critical issues such as housing, healthcare, and substance abuse. Following a recent community vote, Cheryl Moore emerged as the winner in the chief election, narrowly surpassing her opponent Felix Walker.
Moore, who has dedicated over thirty years to various roles within the First Nation based near Nelson House, including serving as a councillor and vice-chief, expressed gratitude for the community’s support. Three incumbent councillors were also re-elected, with new members joining the council for the first time.
In her upcoming role as chief, Moore plans to prioritize the well-being of Nisichawayasihk residents by focusing on housing shortages, job opportunities, community safety, and homelessness. She highlighted the pressing need for improvements in healthcare services within the community, emphasizing the importance of listening to residents’ concerns and providing necessary support.
Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation faced challenges such as addiction, mental health crises, and housing inadequacies, exacerbated by circumstances like the 2025 wildfire evacuation. With a commitment to putting the community’s needs first, Chief-elect Moore is determined to address these issues and lead the nation towards a brighter future.
