The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor Buck Martinez, a veteran broadcaster, by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after announcing over 4,000 games, dedicated close to four decades to the Blue Jays in various roles, including player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his surprise and gratitude, Martinez mentioned in an interview with CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning” that being recognized in this manner was an esteemed privilege. He acknowledged the unwavering support of Jays fans over the years, highlighting how they welcomed him into their homes and made him feel like part of their families.
Known for his distinctive broadcasting style, featuring phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez credited his return to Toronto in 2010 as a pivotal moment that shaped his on-air persona, drawing inspiration from his time in Milwaukee. He shared that phrases like these had roots in his player days, recalling how the team would collectively cheer when a hit seemed destined to clear the fence.
Transitioning into retirement, Martinez admitted that not being involved in professional baseball activities for the first time since 1967 marked a significant change for him. Despite intending to participate in the Blue Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health concerns, including a second battle with cancer in 2025 (having first been diagnosed in 2022), prompted him to step back. However, he happily announced that he is now cancer-free and in good health.
The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will showcase exhibits honoring key figures who have shaped the franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Among the honorees are the current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence, such as Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, George Bell, Joe Carter, and more.
Reflecting on his journey from feeling “exiled” when joining the Blue Jays in 1981 to embracing Toronto as a beloved baseball destination, Martinez praised the city’s baseball culture and fan devotion. Recalling the excitement of last year’s World Series, he highlighted the unforgettable Game 7 and the exceptional team chemistry displayed.
Expressing admiration for the sport’s challenges and unpredictability, Martinez shared thoughts on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s struggles amidst a tough season for the Blue Jays, emphasizing the demanding nature of baseball even for the most talented players.
