“Mother of Three Faces Racist Harassment Amid UK Relocation Dream”

Date:

A mother of three from Gaza faced severe racist harassment following her plea to relocate her family to the UK to pursue her aspirations, a move that was criticized by former Home Secretary and Reform MP Suella Braverman.

Alaa Radwan fled Gaza with her family in 2024 after their residence was destroyed during Israeli bombardment. They sought refuge in Egypt while staying connected with loved ones in war-torn Palestine.

Recently, Alaa secured an unconditional offer to pursue a Master’s degree in Media and Communications at Goldsmith’s University. To fund their journey to the UK, she initiated a GoFundMe campaign.

Expressing her excitement, Alaa shared with the Mirror, “This opportunity is a dream come true for me. It signifies a fresh start for my family as I plan to further my academic journey by pursuing a PhD. It’s a new chapter for a family that has endured significant losses in Gaza.”

However, after appealing on social media platform X, Suella Braverman reposted Alaa’s message, suggesting that Alaa should come to the UK alone for her studies, leaving her spouse and children behind.

Braverman remarked, “Bringing your husband and three kids along for a Media Studies degree isn’t necessary. Universities should prioritize education over immigration.”

Subsequently, Alaa faced a barrage of online attacks from right-wing individuals hurling racist insults at her. Overwhelmed by the hostility, she deactivated her X account.

Alaa disclosed, “Suella Braverman led the charge against me, advocating for the separation of a mother from her three young children. The backlash continued with messages conveying unwelcome sentiments towards my family’s relocation to the UK.”

Despite the adversities, Alaa clarified that the funds raised through GoFundMe were self-sustained, emphasizing their intent to be independent in the UK.

Having successfully amassed over £40,000, Alaa and her family have gathered ample resources to secure her enrollment at Goldsmith’s University and prepare for their UK relocation.

Alaa outlined the allocation of funds, with a significant portion earmarked for tuition fees and the remainder required for visa applications.

Optimistic about the future, Alaa shared, “This marks a fresh start for us. For someone like me, who has experienced immense loss in Gaza, this opportunity symbolizes a new beginning for a family that has endured hardships, displacement, and tragedy for years.”

Support Alaa’s family in their UK transition by contributing to her GoFundMe campaign.
