“Marmalade Gets Makeover: UK-EU Agreement Spurs Name Change”

Date:

Britain’s iconic breakfast favorite, marmalade, is set for a potential name change following an agreement with the European Union. The beloved citrus spread may undergo a rebrand to “citrus marmalade” in supermarkets and stores under a new deal between the UK and the EU.

Before Brexit, EU regulations stipulated that only citrus fruit-based preserves could be labeled as marmalade in the UK. This led to a situation where similar terms were used in other EU countries for non-citrus fruit spreads, like “mermelada” in Spain and “marmellata” in Italy.

Originally, stringent naming regulations for marmalade were established in the 1970s to give the orange-based spread a distinctive status, closely linked to the UK’s cultural identity, notably popularized by Paddington Bear and his marmalade sandwiches.

Post-Brexit, Brussels has revised the rules governing marmalade production, allowing all EU nations to sell non-citrus fruit-based spreads as marmalade from June onwards. Consequently, marmalade made from citrus fruits must now be labeled as “citrus marmalade” to comply with the new regulations.

This adjustment is slated to take effect in Northern Ireland this summer, following a framework agreement that grants the region certain EU-aligned food laws. The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) reassured consumers that British marmalade remains unchanged, emphasizing the adherence to international standards for wider market access.

DEFRA’s spokesperson highlighted the benefits of the UK’s trade agreement with the EU in reducing trade barriers and ensuring alignment with industry rules. The deal aims to facilitate exports to the UK’s primary trading partner while preserving the country’s autonomy in shaping industry regulations.
