A former GP practice manager faced a life-threatening situation after collapsing and being left undiscovered for two days, resulting in serious injuries to her legs and a permanent foot condition resembling that of a ballerina.
Carol Jepson, 66, lost consciousness while in her bedroom on April 28, hitting her face and fracturing her shoulder. She remained on the floor in a kneeling position for 48 hours due to an underlying infection her body was combating, leading to a state of delirium.
Concerned about her well-being, Carol’s sister and niece found her at home and called emergency services after struggling to reach her by phone. Rushed to the hospital, Carol was unconscious for two days as her organs began to fail, causing doctors to fear for her life.
Upon regaining consciousness, Carol was diagnosed with pneumonia, sepsis, and rhabdomyolysis, a severe condition resulting from the muscle breakdown in her legs. The doctors informed her that she might never walk again, leaving her with a permanently pointed foot resembling that of a ballerina.
Following a month-long hospital stay, Carol was transferred to a rehab facility for ongoing physiotherapy in an attempt to repair her muscles. Despite various efforts, including the use of specialized boots and splints, her legs have not shown significant improvement yet.
Carol is currently preparing to return home but will require a wheelchair for mobility within her residence due to her condition. She is seeking an electric wheelchair to regain her independence, as there is a considerable waiting list for NHS-provided equipment.
Expressing her desire for an electric wheelchair to enhance her quality of life, Carol is fundraising for the necessary equipment. Rhabdomyolysis, the condition resulting from the muscle breakdown, poses a serious health risk due to the release of muscle contents into the bloodstream.
