The legendary country music star and philanthropist passed away at the age of 80 on August 25 after a brief battle with cancer. Parton’s legacy includes numerous accolades such as 11 Grammy Awards, two Academy Awards, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
Jinny Greaves, the executive director of the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance, emphasized Parton’s role in promoting children’s literacy as her most influential contribution. Greaves highlighted the power of providing children with books, stating that it not only offers them a tangible item but also fosters imagination, connection with caregivers, and the ability to envision possibilities.
In 1995, Parton established the Imagination Library, a program that distributes free books by mail to children under the age of five. The initiative, initially inspired by Parton’s father’s illiteracy, expanded to Prince Edward Island in 2020 under the management of the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance. Greaves noted that Parton’s personal experiences, growing up without books and with a father who couldn’t read or write, motivated her to ensure that other children did not face similar challenges.
The Imagination Library’s impact on Prince Edward Island was detailed in the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance’s 2025-26 report, which highlighted improved access to books and enhanced family reading habits. The data indicated that families read more frequently, children showed increased interest in books, and family engagement with reading material improved significantly.
In April, the provincial government announced the discontinuation of funding for the Imagination Library as part of budget cuts for 2026-27. However, following public outcry and opposition, the decision was reversed shortly after. Greaves expressed gratitude for the program’s continuation on the island, ensuring that children will continue to receive books through the mail for the foreseeable future.
