Canada’s Sophia Jensen clinched her first-ever world title on Saturday at the 2026 ICF Canoe Sprint & Paracanoe World Championships held in Poznań, Poland. The 24-year-old athlete from Chelsea, Que., secured the top spot in the women’s C1 500-metre final, crossing the finish line in a time of 2 minutes and 0.78 seconds to seize the coveted gold medal. Agnes Anna Kiss of Hungary claimed the silver medal with a time of 2:02.80, while the bronze went to Alena Nazdrova from Belarus with a time of 2:04.80.
In a remarkable display of Canadian talent, Jensen was not the sole medalist on Saturday. Ottawa’s Brianna Hennessy also made her mark by winning the bronze in the KL1 women’s 200m final, achieving a time of 54.20 seconds. The gold in this event was secured by Chilean Paralympic champion Katherinne Wollermann in 52.23 seconds, followed by China’s Maosan Xie who claimed silver with a time of 53.92 seconds.
