British armed forces have thwarted a Russian attempt to spy on crucial undersea cables amidst the distraction caused by the Iran crisis, according to the Defence Secretary. John Healey exposed a covert scheme by Moscow to surveil key infrastructure in the north Atlantic. The Navy deployed multiple assets, including a Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans, RFA Tidespring, and Merlin helicopters, to track a Russian Akula class nuclear-powered attack submarine and two spy vessels in an extensive operation involving over 5,000 British personnel.
To deter Russia from interfering with undersea cables, the military utilized sonobuoys, which are acoustic sensors capable of detecting and tracking underwater threats. RAF conducted more than 50 sorties with P-8 Poseidon submarine-hunting aircraft, supported by allies like Norway.
During a press conference at Downing Street, Mr. Healey directly addressed Russian President Putin, warning against any attempts to damage cables or pipelines, emphasizing the serious consequences it would entail. He highlighted that the operation unfolded discreetly during the Middle East crisis, underscoring Russia as the primary threat to the UK.
The Ministry of Defence recently released satellite images of Olenya Guba, Russia’s naval base in the High North, expressing concerns over potential threats to a vast network of undersea cables and pipelines critical for international telecommunications, banking, trade, and gas supply. Despite the incident, no damage has been reported.
The UK has witnessed a 30% increase in Russian vessels encroaching on its waters in the last two years, with instances like the Yantar spy ship shining lasers at RAF pilots. Notably, Russia dispatched a warship to escort shadow fleet tankers in response to UK threats of seizing sanctioned vessels, indicating the impact of British actions.
As the aftermath of the Iran crisis unfolds, Mr. Healey defended the UK’s military asset deployment strategy in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to prioritize unseen threats. He also addressed criticism from Donald Trump regarding UK military capabilities, asserting the government’s commitment to defense and international alliances like NATO.
