The United Nations made a significant decision on Friday to shift from the outdated Mercator global map, which distorts the true size of countries, to a more accurate representation. This move, led by Togo and supported by African states, aims to combat the misconception that Africa is less significant than it actually is.
Togo spearheaded the initiative in line with the African Union’s campaign to reduce the use of the Mercator map, known for exaggerating land masses closer to the poles. The resolution promotes the Equal Earth projection as a more precise way to depict continents’ sizes.
Although the resolution is not legally binding and does not challenge the Mercator projection’s suitability for navigation purposes, it emphasizes the importance of using a fair and accurate map. The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed the resolution with 164 votes in favor, one against, and six abstentions, with the United States being the sole dissenting voice.
Togo plans to set an example by updating its school geography materials to reflect the Equal Earth projection by the end of the year. The country aims to encourage other nations, schools, international bodies, and technology firms to transition away from the outdated Mercator map. Togo’s Foreign Minister emphasized that this shift is part of broader efforts to address colonial legacies in Africa and promote a more equitable global perspective.
In the coming months, Togo will engage with African Union members and allies from different regions to facilitate wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection. This initiative also involves discussions with companies involved in mapping, GPS, and location-based technologies to ensure a smooth transition. Ultimately, the campaign seeks to promote a more accurate and inclusive representation of the world, recognizing the evolving nature of Africa and global perspectives.
