“Life Sentence Denied: Parole Board Rejects Release Plan”

Date:

George Pitt, a resident of New Brunswick serving a life sentence for the first-degree murder of six-year-old Samantha Toole, has been denied day parole by the Parole Board of Canada. The board determined that Pitt’s proposed release plan did not sufficiently address the risk he poses to society.

The tragic incident involving Samantha Toole, the daughter of Pitt’s former girlfriend Gloria Toole, dates back to October 1993 when her body was discovered in the St. John River. Despite Pitt’s assertions of innocence, his conviction stands from his 1994 trial in Saint John, during which incriminating evidence was presented, including finding blood belonging to Samantha on bedding he was washing.

A key factor in the parole board’s decision was Pitt’s refusal to participate in sex-offender programming, citing his innocence and past trauma as reasons. This stance, according to experts in law, creates challenges for individuals seeking release post-conviction.

While Pitt has engaged in various rehabilitation programs, the board expressed concerns about his progress, citing unresolved disciplinary issues and the lack of completion of necessary programming. A recent psychological assessment highlighted Pitt’s risk factors for violence and sexual reoffending as above average and moderate, respectively.

Although community-based facilities were willing to house Pitt upon release, the parole board found his proposed plan lacking in detail regarding supervision, treatment, and overall support. The board emphasized the need for a comprehensive community reintegration plan, including employment and medical and psychological support, to reduce the risk of reoffending.

Despite Pitt’s eligibility for parole assessment, the board emphasized that eligibility does not guarantee release, and Pitt will remain incarcerated for the time being as his current release plan does not meet the board’s criteria for safe reintegration into society.
