Get ready to bundle up as the second season of North of North returns to Ice Cove. The acclaimed comedy series, a collaborative effort between APTN, CBC, and Netflix, continues to follow Siaja (portrayed by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman navigating life post a highly publicized split from her spouse. Season 1 of the show was a global sensation, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and receiving accolades for blending humor with weighty themes.
Co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald shared, “We appreciate comedy that has heart. We enjoy laughter but also appreciate moments that tug at the heartstrings.” The series garnered significant recognition, clinching nine Canadian Screen Awards, including best comedy series and best lead performer in a comedy for Lambe.
Reflecting on the unexpected success, co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril remarked, “We sensed something special was happening, but the scale of its triumph took us by surprise.” MacDonald added, “We were overjoyed by it all.”
Season 2 resumes where Season 1 concluded, with Siaja navigating the complexities of motherhood, work, and dating while navigating strained relationships with her mother, Neevee (played by Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (portrayed by Jay Ryan). The season kicks off as Siaja processes her mother’s revelation about having an older sister, determined to rebuild her life and unearth her true identity.
Lambe noted that her character’s life takes a tumultuous turn in this season, with constant unraveling despite her efforts. Siaja finds herself in a vulnerable state in her bond with her mother. Meanwhile, Neevee, described as a tough nut to crack by Harper, begins to open up, revealing she has moved on from searching for her eldest child.
The show’s authenticity is accentuated by its use of Iqaluit as a backdrop for Ice Cove, with filming in the Arctic tundra lending a grounded and enchanting feel. The creators emphasized the importance of Inuit representation in the cast and crew to maintain authenticity. The series celebrates diverse Inuit fashion styles, aiming to create outerwear that is culturally resonant and familiar.
Season 2 promises unexpected plot twists and deeper explorations of familiar characters’ lives. With new faces and heightened humor and emotion, the upcoming season aims to captivate viewers even more. The return of key cast members alongside guest appearances by notable figures sets the stage for a thrilling and engaging continuation of the beloved series.
