“Ridley Scott’s ‘The Dog Stars’ Disappoints Box Office”

Date:

“Post-apocalyptic movie ‘The Dog Stars’ by 20th Century Fox failed to impress at the box office, earning only $19.3 million in its US opening weekend. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Jacob Elordi, the film, estimated to cost $80 million to produce, had a disappointing debut in 2026, amidst a mix of hits and misses in the film industry this year.

Based on Peter Heller’s novel, ‘The Dog Stars’ received criticism for its slow pace, cliché genre elements, and a peculiar ending. This marks another box office letdown for Ridley Scott, whose recent films, including ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Gladiator 2,’ have also underperformed.

The film’s lackluster performance mirrors a trend of other 2026 flops like ‘Supergirl,’ ‘The Bride,’ and ‘Moana.’ However, successful releases such as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ ‘The Odyssey,’ ‘Michael,’ and ‘Toy Story 5’ are boosting the industry, with 2026 potentially becoming a standout year since the pandemic began.

Unlike past years dominated by sequels, 2026 sees a rise in original films resonating with audiences. Low-budget hits like ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession,’ alongside non-franchise successes like ‘Project Hail Mary’ and surprise hits like ‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ have contributed to this year’s box office growth.

US box office revenue has surged 15% compared to last year, reaching $6.2 billion by August 2. In Canada, films like ‘Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,’ ‘Little Lorraine,’ and ‘Mile End Kicks’ have driven a nearly 180% increase in box office gross in the first two quarters of 2026.

The industry’s upward trend may continue with upcoming releases like ‘Dune 3’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ potentially lifting 2026 to a $10 billion year. While ‘The Dog Stars’ did not benefit from this trend, its performance underscores a shift towards more innovative and boundary-pushing storytelling sought by today’s audiences.”
