Several Canadian websites, including those for government agencies, exhibited maps showing Lake Ontario as Lake America on Sunday. This change followed Google Maps’ adjustment to comply with a directive from U.S. President Donald Trump. Google stated in a post on Saturday that it updated the lake’s name based on the U.S. government’s official geographic names database.
Although Google mentioned that the alteration would impact only U.S. users, various Ontario and Canadian websites displayed Lake America on their maps. Entities like Hydro One, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), GO Transit, and the federal government’s housing and infrastructure map were among those affected.
Hydro One acknowledged the labeling error on its outage map, attributing it to a third-party mapping service. The company is working to rectify the issue promptly. Metrolinx, which oversees GO Transit, is also addressing the matter by verifying that all websites correctly identify Lake Ontario.
Tech expert Carmi Levy explained that Canadian websites, such as those of Ontario Hydro and LCBO, likely use Google’s application programming interface (API) for their maps. As APIs are not location-specific, all maps integrated with Google’s API now display Lake America. Levy emphasized the significance of Canada developing its mapping technologies to avoid dependency on American platforms.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized the name change, asserting that Lake Ontario’s historical identity should be preserved. Prime Minister Mark Carney also reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to acknowledging the lake by its original name. The dispute over the lake’s renaming comes amid escalating tensions between Canada and the U.S. following failed trade negotiations. Both countries have levied tariffs, with Canada announcing retaliatory measures in response to new U.S. trade policies.
Despite Trump’s executive order, which echoes a previous renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, leaders like Ford and Carney maintain that Lake Ontario’s traditional name should endure. The alterations mandated by U.S. federal documents have sparked a broader debate on national sovereignty and digital independence in Canada’s online landscape.
