“Canada Adjusts Tariff List: Seafood Out, Copper In”

Date:

The Canadian government has adjusted its list of counter-tariffs by removing seafood and fish products and adding copper wire and charcoal to maintain equal measures against the U.S. The decision to remove seafood products was made based on industry feedback, according to a statement issued by Finance Canada.

In response to recent U.S. tariffs, Canada announced an increase in duties on American steel and aluminum products from 25 to 50 percent, along with a 25 percent tariff on various seafood items. Additionally, copper wire, charcoal, plaster sheets, tiles, and printed photographs will now be subject to a 50 percent tariff starting on September 8.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized that the government considered the interests of Canadians in making these changes. He stated that updating the tariff list was the right decision for Canada, without directly addressing the potential implications on relations with the White House.
