California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure from the Republican Party will compel President Donald Trump to resume negotiations with Canada. Newsom expressed this view in an interview with CBC News’ chief political correspondent, Rosemary Barton. The timing of this statement coincides with the approaching U.S. midterm elections, where Republicans face the risk of losing their majority control in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. came to a halt recently, leading to Prime Minister Mark Carney suspending negotiations. Shortly after, Trump imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods worth around $28 billion. Newsom believes that Trump cannot afford to prolong the break in negotiations and anticipates his return to the negotiating table within a matter of days or at most a few weeks.
In clear opposition to Trump’s actions, Newsom emphasized California’s stance, stating, “We do not support the president’s behavior towards Canada.” The Governor openly criticized Trump, expressing disgust and embarrassment as an American due to his actions in the White House.
California is feeling the impact of the trade conflict, particularly in the wine industry. The state’s wine exports to Canada, its largest foreign market, suffered a significant decline of $343 million between 2024 and 2025. Newsom acknowledged the frustration among California wine makers towards Canada and attributed the situation to Trump’s policies.
Despite the challenges faced by the wine industry, Newsom acknowledged the complexities of reinstating wine sales in the near future. He commended Carney’s firm approach towards Trump, highlighting that the President respects strength and not weakness.
Newsom, who is not seeking re-election as California’s governor, is speculated to be a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential race. When questioned about his motives regarding his opposition to Trump’s tariffs, Newsom emphasized that his actions are not driven by political aspirations, although he did not dismiss the possibility of a future presidential bid.
