Junior hockey players in the Canadian Hockey League who have experienced abuse or hazing may now seek compensation through the legal system. The Ontario Superior Court has approved a process for players from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Western Hockey League (WHL) to pursue claims for mistreatment dating back to 1975, when the CHL was founded. The law firm Koskie Minsky LLP, based in Toronto, is managing the claims, with submissions accepted until April 6. Gerry Antman, a lawyer and partner at the firm, specializes in cases of institutional abuse and class actions involving personal injuries. Unlike a typical class action, players must apply to participate by detailing the abuse they endured and its lasting effects on their lives.
Following the rejection of a proposed class action by former players against the CHL, the opt-in process was established by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Antman mentioned that his firm frequently hears from former junior hockey players recounting instances of abuse, some of which are recent. When pressed for specifics on the allegations, Antman indicated that the details are too distressing to discuss publicly. OHL spokesperson Josh Sweetland expressed the league and its teams’ backing of the court’s initiative in creating the opt-in system, emphasizing their commitment to player safety and well-being. Due to the legal nature of the matter, the CHL refrains from commenting on individual claims.
Each legal action will name the CHL, the respective regional league, and the implicated team or teams as defendants, ultimately liable for any compensation awarded. Antman reassured that their team is prepared to assist individuals throughout the process, ensuring a supportive and trauma-informed approach to accessing justice.
