US Vice President JD Vance has expressed his commitment to pursuing a substantial agreement with Iran, rejecting the notion of settling for a minor deal. Vance recently led discussions with Iranian officials in Pakistan, spanning 21 hours without reaching a consensus. He is anticipated to lead potential follow-up negotiations if they come to fruition.
During the talks, Vance noted that the Iranian counterparts showed willingness to reach an agreement despite existing distrust between the two nations. Speaking at an event in Athens, Georgia, Vance voiced optimism about the progress, emphasizing the importance of achieving a comprehensive deal rather than a limited one.
Highlighting President Trump’s firm stance, Vance stated, “He doesn’t seek a small-scale agreement but aims for a significant pact.” The delay in finalizing the deal, according to Vance, is attributed to the President’s vision for Iran to abandon nuclear ambitions, cease state-sponsored terrorism, and enable the Iranian population to prosper and engage in the global economy.
Vance reiterated the determination to continue negotiations to realize this vision, affirming his commitment to the cause. Following Vance’s return from the talks, President Trump announced measures to intercept vessels that have paid tolls to Iran in international waters and to eliminate Iranian-laid mines in the Straits, warning of severe consequences for any hostile actions.
As peace talks faltered, the US initiated a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
