A woman suffered severe facial injuries from her pet pitbull after collapsing during a seizure. Karma Davis, 25, lost both lips, a portion of her left cheek, and the bottom of her nose during the incident. Her left ear was disfigured, while her right ear was partially torn but later reattached.
Karma, who has a history of grand mal seizures, forgot to take her medication that day, likely triggering the episode. During her most recent seizure on March 2, her rescue dog Fayzo attacked her while she was unconscious on the kitchen floor.
After regaining consciousness, Karma FaceTimed her fiancé and discovered the extent of her injuries. She was rushed to the hospital, where surgeons performed emergency procedures, including a medically induced coma for two-and-a-half days and multiple surgeries. She is now under ongoing care, requiring visits to a plastic surgeon and assistance from home health nurses.
Doctors are exploring options for reconstructive surgery, such as additional grafts or a full lower-face transplant, which would necessitate lifelong anti-rejection medication. Despite the challenges, Karma remains positive, appreciating the abilities she still retains, like sight, hearing, and mobility.
The dog involved in the attack, which Karma had rescued four years earlier, was euthanized. Karma described the incident as “very out of character,” emphasizing that the dog had never displayed aggression before. She remains optimistic about her future, making light of the situation and focusing on her recovery journey.
