Voters are set to cast their ballots on Monday in three federal byelections in different Canadian ridings: North Vancouver–Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches–East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord in Quebec.
With the Liberals holding 170 seats in the House of Commons due to vacancies, the opposition parties collectively have 166 seats. The Liberals need to win at least two of the byelections to ensure control of the legislative agenda once all seats are filled.
The most closely contested race is anticipated in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, where former Conservative MP Richard Martel vacated the seat after his appointment to the Senate. Polls indicate a tight race between the Liberals and Bloc Québécois, with Daniel Gobeil representing the Liberals and Caroline Dubé running for the Bloc.
In Beaches–East York, candidates are vying to succeed former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election. The candidates in this riding include Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.
In North Vancouver–Capilano, contenders aim to fill the seat left vacant by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who was appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.

If the Liberals do not win any of the three byelections, they will have more opportunities in the future to secure the two wins required for a majority. Prime Minister Carney has yet to call byelections in three Quebec ridings and one Ontario riding, while Conservative MPs in Saskatchewan and Ontario are also expected to resign from their seats.
