Nigel Farage has dismissed Reform’s housing chief after he made controversial remarks about the Grenfell Tower fire, calling it a “tragedy” but stating that “everyone dies in the end.”
Simon Dudley, a former executive at Homes England and the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, faced backlash for his insensitive comments. He suggested that regulations had swung too far in response to the tragic fire, which claimed 72 lives.
Speaking to Inside Housing magazine, Mr. Dudley remarked, “Unfortunately, everyone meets their end eventually. It’s just a matter of how.” Families of the victims expressed outrage at his callous statement.
In a recent interview, Mr. Dudley criticized the building safety regulations implemented post-Grenfell as ineffective. Grenfell United, representing bereaved families and survivors, condemned his remarks as not only insensitive but dehumanizing.
The group stated, “Our loved ones did not just pass away; they were let down. They were trapped in their supposedly safe homes during a preventable fire. Reframing their deaths as inevitable diminishes the truth and avoids accountability.”
Farage announced during a press conference that Mr. Dudley had been relieved of his position as a spokesperson due to the inappropriateness of his comments. When asked about Dudley’s dismissal, Farage confirmed, “That has already been done.”
Earlier, Keir Starmer criticized Dudley’s statement as “shameful” and called for his immediate removal. Housing charity Shelter’s CEO, Sarah Elliott, condemned Dudley’s remarks, emphasizing the avoidable nature of the Grenfell tragedy and the need for safe and affordable housing for all.
The Grenfell Inquiry underscored that the 72 deaths could have been prevented and highlighted decades of neglect by authorities and the construction industry regarding fire safety in high-rise buildings.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed demanded Farage dismiss Dudley, labeling his comments on the Grenfell victims as disgraceful and unacceptable. London Mayor Sadiq Khan also criticized Dudley’s insensitivity, describing Reform’s stance as revealing their true character.
