Reform UK is facing criticism for its performance at Kent County Council, described as tumultuous and lacking in tangible benefits for residents, according to testimonies obtained by The Mirror. The party, led by Nigel Farage, took over the council a year ago, promising a new era in governance. However, feedback from locals, charities, and politicians suggests little to no positive impact.
Residents in Maidstone, Kent, expressed dissatisfaction, with many highlighting a lack of noticeable improvements under Reform’s administration. Eileen, 88, lamented the neglect of basic services like road maintenance, stating that “nothing gets done properly.” Similarly, Frank, 60, and Paul, 70, observed no significant changes compared to the previous Conservative-led council.
Critics within Kent’s political circles have described the Reform leadership as confrontational, counterproductive, and disorganized. Several Reform councillors have resigned or parted ways with the party since their election victory.
A notable controversy involved a leaked video showing Kent’s Reform leader, Linden Kemkaran, using profanity and dismissive language towards colleagues. Former Tory councilor Dan Watkins criticized Reform’s governance style, labeling it as detrimental to constructive debate and local democracy.
The party was accused of engaging in symbolic politics on national issues like immigration, diverting focus from local governance. Critics raised concerns about the effectiveness of Reform’s initiatives, such as the Department of Local Government Efficiency (Dolge) project, which aimed to reduce spending but faced significant backlash.
