“Card Games Causing Airport Security Delays”

Date:

Airport security can often be a frustrating aspect of air travel. Once you reach the front of the line, the last thing you want is any further delays. Placing your bag on the conveyor belt, you hope for a swift passage through the scanner, allowing you to proceed with your journey without hindrance. The anxiety of seeing your bag stuck in the scanner or diverted for manual inspection is something no traveler relishes.

However, many passengers may not realize that seemingly harmless items can trigger alarm bells for security personnel, causing delays. Whether you are heading to a destination with poor WiFi or simply looking for some entertainment during your trip, bringing along a deck of cards or other card games may seem like a good idea. The resurgence of interest in trading cards, like Pokémon, and tarot cards for holiday readings has been noted. Nevertheless, carrying any type of cards, whether for leisure or mystical purposes, can pose a security risk.

According to a spokesperson from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), it is advisable to pack cards, especially valuable ones like collectible trading cards, in your carry-on bag. The shape and density of cards can trigger additional screenings as they might appear suspicious on X-ray scans. To expedite the security process and prevent delays, travelers are recommended to place their cards in a separate tray alongside their mobile phone during screening.

If cards still raise concerns during scanning, security staff may need to conduct a physical inspection, particularly for travelers with extensive card collections. Apart from cards, various personal items are prohibited in hand luggage due to safety concerns, ranging from sharp objects to seemingly harmless items like corkscrews that could potentially be confiscated.
