“B.C. Imposes Water-Use Restrictions to Protect Endangered Salmon”

Date:

A recent water-use restriction has been imposed on the Bessette Creek area in the southern Interior of British Columbia to safeguard endangered chinook salmon facing risks in the prolonged drought conditions. The B.C. Ministry of Land, Water, and Resource Stewardship disclosed that the persisting severe drought led to historically low water levels in Bessette Creek in early July, jeopardizing the survival of the local salmon population.

Situated approximately 480 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, Bessette Creek has been labeled a “critical concern” by provincial conservation authorities due to the heightened threat to the salmon population caused by low streamflows during spawning. Despite substantial voluntary conservation actions in the region, the water levels have not seen significant improvement, prompting the ministry to enforce a temporary fish protection order that restricts water usage for forage crops, as well as specific mining and industrial activities.

The ministry has mandated that 131 surface-water and groundwater license holders in the Bessette Creek watershed cease water usage for crop irrigation, harvesting, greenhouses, nurseries, and well-drilling starting Friday. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food is prepared to assist producers with inquiries or claims from those experiencing crop failures or income reductions due to the ongoing drought conditions.
