A parent’s journey with a child who has severe allergies
Morgan Klachefsky, a resident of Winnipeg, recounts the terrifying experience when her son Simon, then 18 months old, suffered a severe allergic reaction to a cashew. Rushed to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department, Simon was diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to cashews and pistachios.
The incident left Morgan overwhelmed with fear, realizing the constant threat her son faced. Determined to protect Simon, she embarked on a journey of educating herself and others about managing his allergies. However, her fear led to overprotective behavior, making it challenging for her to trust anyone but herself and her husband with Simon’s care.
As Simon grew older, his courage inspired Morgan to address her mental health and relinquish some control. She gradually learned to trust other parents and allow Simon more freedom, teaching him to take responsibility for his allergies. Despite the ongoing vigilance, Morgan has come to terms with the fact that she cannot control every aspect of her son’s life and focuses on guiding him through challenges rather than shielding him from them.
Simon’s increasing independence led to significant milestones, such as attending sleepaway camp for the first time. Despite initial apprehension, Morgan entrusted his safety to trusted individuals and witnessed Simon’s growth and resilience. Each step towards independence strengthens their bond and prepares them for the uncertainties life may bring.
Morgan’s story highlights the ongoing journey of a parent navigating the complexities of raising a child with severe allergies, emphasizing the importance of education, trust, and gradual empowerment.
