In an exclusive interview, Fat Marmot Week organizer Katie Adler shared insights on the competition’s first winner, a plump yellow-bellied marmot named Dawn renowned for his affinity for eating rocks. Dawn clinched victory in both the popular vote and weight gain categories during the event held by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colo.
According to Dawn’s online bio, he is known for fathering multiple baby marmots and indulging in licking salt and minerals off rocks. His summer weight surged from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms, nearly doubling from 5.5 to 13 pounds. Adler, speaking to As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal, expressed her belief that Dawn was a deserving champion due to his unique rock-eating habits.
Despite his triumph, Dawn faces the added responsibility of being an ambassador for the Marmot Project, a vital long-term research initiative facing uncertainty amidst significant cuts to science and education funding in the U.S.
Inspired by the popular Fat Bear Week contest in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, Fat Marmot Week celebrates the hibernation preparations of Gothic’s yellow-bellied marmot population. These chubby critters need to bulk up to survive the harsh winter conditions by storing ample fat reserves.
Adler, a UCLA graduate student involved in the Marmot Project, emphasized the project’s significance as the second-longest study of individually marked mammals globally. Over the past 60 years, researchers have monitored 5,000 marmots across 12 generations, studying their adaptations to environmental changes and human disturbances.
However, the Marmot Project faces challenges due to funding cuts, including a 20% reduction in the National Science Foundation budget. This financial strain has necessitated innovative fundraising efforts like OnlyMarms, an unconventional campaign on the platform OnlyFans, to garner public support and donations.
Despite raising over $120,000 in donations, the Marmot Project acknowledges the limitations of such short-term funding solutions. To address these financial uncertainties, the project has initiated a petition urging U.S. Congress to reconsider research budget cuts, emphasizing the importance of sustained funding for scientific endeavors.
While the Marmot Project continues its research efforts, including planning for the next Fat Marmot Week in 2027, Adler remains hopeful that initiatives like these will foster greater public appreciation for these resilient creatures and their remarkable survival strategies.
