President Donald Trump has requested Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, according to a senior U.S. government official. The renaming directive has stirred tensions in Canada amidst ongoing trade disputes. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated that Trump personally contacted Apple regarding the name change. Burgum anticipates the alteration to be implemented soon, reflecting the new name “Lake America.”
Recently, Trump issued an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” following the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations and the imposition of significant tariffs by the United States. In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs set to take effect in the coming week.
Despite Trump’s order, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly opposed the proposed name change. Carney affirmed in a social media post that Lake Ontario, situated between Ontario and New York state as one of the Great Lakes, will forever be known as Lake Ontario.
Google announced that Google Maps users in the U.S. would see “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario in adherence to official government sources. While Canadian users will continue to see Lake Ontario on Google Maps, some Ontario and Canadian websites briefly displayed “Lake America” due to third-party data sources linked to Google’s U.S. API.
Apple has not yet responded to inquiries about the potential renaming of Lake Ontario on Apple Maps as requested by Trump. As of now, Apple Maps in Canada still identifies the body of water as Lake Ontario.
In a previous executive order in 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, impacting federal documents and geographic services. Some online mapping services and U.S. news outlets have adopted the name “Gulf of America,” with Apple Maps currently indicating the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
