NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player record, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL reported that he was hospitalized while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona on August 20.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. The university where Mayich is listed as a player, Arizona State University, revealed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and remains in the hospital. The university is investigating the circumstances of the incident but has not disclosed the student’s identity.
Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the Blues, stated that the entire organization is keeping Matthew Mayich in their thoughts and prayers for his comfort and recovery during his medical treatment in Arizona. The Blues extend their deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time.
OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford also expressed solidarity with Mayich, his parents, and family, emphasizing the league’s support for him. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club (formerly the Huskies) shared supportive messages for Mayich in 2021 when he joined the ’67s and in 2023 when he was picked by the Blues, highlighting his long-standing involvement with the organization since the age of nine.
