Serena and Venus Williams have secured a spot in the U.S. Open doubles competition through a wild card entry. This marks their return to playing together at the tournament, where they have previously clinched the title twice.
After a hiatus of four years, Serena Williams made a comeback to tennis this summer. The sisters were slated to compete at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury following a singles match defeat. Their recent outing at the Cincinnati Open ended with an early exit in the initial round.
Having claimed the U.S. Open doubles championship in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast a commendable record of 27 wins and 7 losses across their nine appearances. Their most recent participation in 2022 saw them exiting in the opening round, anticipated to be Serena’s final match at Flushing Meadows.
At the age of 44, Serena partnered with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles, securing a victory before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles event.
The formidable duo of Serena and Venus Williams has amassed an impressive tally of 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, in addition to clinching Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. Their prowess led them to jointly hold the top spot in women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
While Serena opted out of the singles competition at the U.S. Open, where she has triumphed in six Grand Slam singles events, she decided to pair up with Venus for the doubles matches. Their initial U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s first singles title win, with their dominance as a team peaking around a decade later.
Their illustrious journey includes victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by a U.S. Open triumph in the same year. Subsequent wins in Australia in 2010 and the French Open solidified their legacy, holding all four major trophies simultaneously.
The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament is scheduled for September 3, setting the stage for the Williams sisters to once again showcase their exceptional teamwork.
