Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories involves family dinners on a small beige mat. The setting sun would cast a warm glow as we enjoyed delicious Pakistani meals, often centered around aromatic biryani or butter chicken with naan. This tradition, passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore, symbolized gratitude for the food we shared and united us as a family.
As time passed, busy schedules kept my siblings and me from these gatherings for over a decade. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner at 23, I reintroduced the tradition to my friends of diverse backgrounds. Setting up the worn-out beige mat in the living room, we recreated the circle of togetherness with plates of Thanksgiving turkey.
The experience was heartwarming as my father, witnessing the revival of the tradition, joined us on the ground to explain its significance. This moment bridged the gap between our cultural heritage and Canadian customs, resonating with my friends and sparking a renewed interest in the tradition.
Inspired by this event, my family decided to embrace the tradition once more, gathering around the mat to share food and stories. As we prioritize dinner time, whether on the mat or at the dining table, the essence of togetherness continues to strengthen the bonds within our family, echoing through generations past and future.
