Toronto Woman Becomes Caregiver for Neurodivergent Brother

Date:

Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, recently faced a significant life change following her mother’s passing. She took on the role of primary caregiver for her older brother, Stuart, who is also neurodivergent. Managing the responsibilities of caring for Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, while fostering a harmonious living arrangement for both siblings has presented its challenges.

Despite the challenges, Simone appreciates Stuart’s company, with his infectious giggle, love for pistachio milkshakes, and interest in violinist podcasts. However, Stuart’s needs, such as requiring assistance with feeding due to hand tremors, transfers from wheelchair to commode, and help with personal care tasks, add complexity to their living situation. Stuart also experiences emotional lability and sensitivity to loud noises.

Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalls feeling embarrassed and saddened by Stuart’s autism, especially when peers misunderstood his behavior. As an adult, Simone acknowledges her own neurodivergent traits, such as ADHD, and the effort she made to mask them to fit in with societal norms. Despite the challenges, Simone strives to create a supportive environment for both herself and Stuart in their shared living space.

Through this experience, Simone has learned to be more present and attentive to Stuart’s needs, fostering a deeper connection with her brother. While adjusting her lifestyle to accommodate their unique situation, Simone remains committed to providing the best care for Stuart and strengthening their relationship as siblings.
