A man was reportedly attacked with a hammer by a woman while he was lying in a hospital bed.
The incident took place during the early hours at a hospital in Sydney’s inner west.
According to NSW Police, emergency services responded to a hospital in Camperdown at 12:15 am on Thursday, April 9 following a report of an assault.
Authorities were informed that the woman, who is believed to be acquainted with the man, entered the hospital and assaulted the 63-year-old individual.
The man sustained severe injuries and is currently in critical condition after allegedly being struck in the head with a hammer during the assault.
A 46-year-old woman has been taken into custody and charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to the victim.
As per the Daily Telegraph, police are investigating a potential link between the assault and a recent death in the man’s family, which has resulted in a will dispute.
A spokesperson for NSW Police stated, “A woman is set to appear in court after an alleged assault in Sydney’s inner west today.”
“At around 12:15 am on Thursday, April 9, emergency services were summoned to a hospital in Camperdown following reports of an assault.”
“Upon arrival, officers from Inner West Police Area Command were informed that a woman allegedly entered the hospital and attacked a 63-year-old man, known to her.”
“During the altercation, it is claimed that the man was struck on the head with a hammer, causing severe injuries. The man’s condition remains critical.”
“A 46-year-old woman was apprehended at the scene and charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to the victim.”
“She was denied bail and is scheduled to appear before Bail Division Court 6 today (Thursday, April 9, 2026).”
A representative from Sydney LHD commented, “The safety and well-being of our patients and staff throughout Sydney Local Health District are our utmost concern, and any form of violence in our hospitals is unacceptable.”
“We can confirm there was an incident at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital overnight where a patient was assaulted by a visitor. No other patients or staff were harmed during the incident.”
“This matter is currently under investigation by NSW Police. Sydney Local Health District is cooperating with the authorities to aid in their inquiries.”
