Police have issued a urgent advisory to dog owners to ensure control over their pets following a tragic incident where four alpacas were fatally attacked at a farm. The distressing event took place close to the village of Wisbech St Mary in Cambridgeshire on Tuesday morning when two dogs, identified as Rottweilers, killed four alpacas and injured two others. The dogs have been seized, and an investigation is underway regarding the attack on the livestock.
Law enforcement authorities are emphasizing the importance of keeping dogs on a leash while in rural areas to prevent similar incidents and to avoid potential legal consequences for harming or frightening farm animals. Alpacas and llamas have recently been included in the protected livestock category, reflecting their growing presence on farms across the UK.
Sergent Tom Nuttall of the Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s Rural Crime Action Team (RCAT) expressed deep concern over the incident, urging dog owners to take responsibility for securing their animals to ensure the safety of all creatures. Livestock worrying is considered a criminal offense under UK law, and with the recent addition of llamas and alpacas to the protected livestock list, it is crucial for dog owners to be vigilant.
The rise in dog attacks on livestock has been a growing concern, with incidents costing an estimated £1.95 million in 2025, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Sheep and lambs are the most common targets of such attacks, with a single incident resulting in the death of 44 sheep last year.
